Fiona Struengmann

One day at a flea market, after an unexpected interaction with a stranger, Fiona Struengmann inherited a 7000 image archive of old photographs. After editing down the collection, she started working with a small group of intriguing photographs. Struengmann began altering the surface of prints; erasing parts with chemicals and adding paint. In doing so, she breathed a new life and a new narrative into these aged, archival prints.

By subtracting parts of the original photograph, Struengmann is distilling the images down to one detail or gesture that has a potent emotional presence. The resulting empty expanses not only serve to create beautiful compositions with the negative space; but they also function as a place where we can build our own narrative into the image.
